The Importance of the Unreasonable Man

Almost every person in the world takes a certain pride in being a reasonable person. They will make prudent choices based on their background and attitudes. The safe decision minimizes the chances of being wrong. No one likes to be wrong.

The safe decision, however, carries little upside reward benefits. You are expected to pay your bills. Pay your taxes. Drive responsibly. Not yell fire in a theatre. Doing these things nets you no special extras.

All of the great ideas or advances in history have evolved from unsafe, unconventional ideas. The non-conventional idea always offers the higher reward, as well as higher risk. It is not the norm to be unsafe. It takes vision and confidence in the face of the usual chorus of criticism, doubters and opponents.

I concur. We all know men that were unconventional thinkers before their time. He wanted to take on Big Brother, the Federal Government, the classic snail mail service subsidized and delivered by the United States Post Office. He faced unimaginable hurdles. Huge capital formation needs, access to commercial airports, hard fixed overheads, licensing, etc. were huge barriers to entry. The idea was panned. He started with one, very sued plane.

Mr. Smith knew he had identified a niche that was completely under-served and corporations would run to utilize. The disruptive innovations FedEx created have severely smacked the USPO with a dose of reality. FedEx is so successful that it has emboldened competitors to enter the field (the highest form of flattery: copying). During the Katrina disaster in New Orleans the USPO was delivering mail after five weeks. FedEx was delivering needed medicines and supplies for the relief workers after three days.
Not many sports fans today remember the name Dick Fosbury. Entering the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City no one paid much attention to Mr. Fosbury’s chances. He was a high jumper that had never jumped very high. Nevertheless a competitive spirit brewed quietly inside him. He knew he could jump higher, be competitive and, maybe, win a medal. He was on nobody’s short list of favorites.

Step#2 Getting From Point A to Point B

In my previous article, Step 1, we discussed the many
responsibilities we have as mothers, wives, and business women.
Your challenge for the month was to research where your passion
lies. Based on your research you might have discovered that self
investigation can lead us to two places; either we find out our
answer or we realize we need to ask more questions to get that
answer.

Finding your purpose takes great effort, but can be effortless
all at the same time. It seems that once we begin pursuing that
in which we were intended, everything falls into place. But the
matter we have to realize is that time plays a great role.
Sometimes people are over night successes and others have to
nurture their purpose for years to come. Keep in mind though, as
long as you enjoy what it is you are pursuing and the motivation
you have is strong, than that alone will sustain your ambition
and provide your passion longevity.

Remember you are making a commitment to yourself. You should
treat that commitment the same way you would treat a marriage or
devoted friendship. The key is to value yourself the way you
value others. Having a good attitude from the very beginning can
make the difference and not only affect your career, but the
people around you. Self dedication does show and the commitment
will be reflected in your professional life and relationships.

Assuming you now have a general idea of what you would like to
do, now you need to visualize how to get from Point A, where you
are now, to Point B, where you would like to be. Sometimes it is
easier to set up a structure for your business if you look at
the large picture of your purpose and where you intend to be in
the future. Granted your ideas and goals change as you change,
but your general purpose will usually remain the same, it just
branches out.

Now that you have researched what you want to do, take the time
to research what others in your area of interest have already
done. Conducting market research will allow you to get a feel
for the industry you are entering. It’s important to see what is
out there. Look up trade journals and magazines. Really put some
effort into getting involved with your career and learning about
it. Every career has an abundant amount of resources available
and a lot of that information is free. If you see a trade
journal or magazine that you like, sign up for their newsletter.
This will help keep you updated on industry events and trends.

Reading and researching can be one sided tasks. Sometimes it is
easier to learn about your career by actually interacting with
others in the field. This can be done on your own time instead
of regular business hours thanks to the internet. Now you can
find chat groups, users groups, and forums and you are not
limited by time zones or borders.

One of my favorite resources is Yahoo Groups at
http://groups.yahoo.com/. You can look up any particular subject
and find a group where you can discuss some of your career
objections. This is an excellent way to network with your peers
and experts in the field. It is not uncommon to find a lot of
other “newbies” in these groups as well as professionals. The
most important thing is to not be afraid to ask questions. If
you don’t know what questions to ask then reading over the
archives of a group is a great place to start. Groups vary in
size and subject so what I suggest is to join a couple to see
which ones fit your personal needs.

Another resource you can use is ListServ lists
http://www.lsoft.com/catalist.html. Typically you subscribe
through your email client to a discussion group within your
field of interest. You can also do a search for “listserves” or
“user groups” on the internet to pull up a vast amount of sites
that list an array of groups. Not all lists are treated equal so
again use your own judgment when joining.

I also personally like forum communities. You can often search
for “forums” online to find one in your career field. It’s a
great opportunity to share your discoveries as well as learn
from others. Not to mention you can do several searches within a
forum and read old posts. This is a great way to see other
member profiles which often reference their personal or business
websites. Some forums even have a ‘members’ section that lists
all their members profiles. Any profile with a “www” by their
name usually has a live link to their site. Be sure to take the
time and visit these sites for reference.

When you are visiting other people’s websites in your field, I
advise you to check and see if they have a links page. I have
found so many great resources through other people’s links
pages. Also it helps you get an idea of what sites you can
possibly request link exchanges from in the future.

By networking with others and conducting your own market
research, you will gain a better sense of direction and get an
idea where it is you want to be in the future with your career.
If you see a website that you like, bookmark it. Then once you
have collected enough information, go back and review your
favorites once more. Ask yourself what do you like about it?
What information was useful to you? Was the site visually
appealing? Was the site easy to navigate? If not, what would you
change? What information would you add? Take notes, write your
thoughts down and remember… patience plus perseverance, equals
purpose.

Writing To Overpower Your Competition

“We don’t have any competition. We’re a truly a one-of-a-kind
company.” I’ve heard that line from clients for years. I wish it
were true, but it’s simply not. In fact, it wouldn’t matter if
you held a monopoly on your particular product or service; you’d
still have competition. How? Because your competition doesn’t
come from a singular source.

There may be no other businesses that sell the product or
service you sell, but you still have competition. Once that’s
understood you have a greater advantage when it comes to
copywriting. You can recognize the other options your customers
have before them and can position yourself as the only logical
choice.

Know Who Your Competition Is

Competition comes from a variety of sources. Yes, there are
those who sell the same things you sell, but there competition
comes in other forms, too.

The Same But Different

Charitable organizations are a good example of “same but
different.” Your group may be the only one raising funds to save
the purple spotted toad of northern Antarctica but that doesn’t
mean you’ll receive a flood of contributions from everyone you
call. Why? Because there are a million and a half other
charitable organizations out there all vying for the same money
from the same people.

None of these other groups is trying to raise funds to save the
purple spotted toad of northern Antarctica, but they are trying
to get individuals to donate to their causes. That makes them
all your competition.

How do you get around this problem? Assuming your traffic
generating efforts or your mailing list is highly targeted,
you’ll want to make a strong case for this little toad. In your
copy, let the readers know why the purple spotted toad is
important to the environment (he’s the only toad in existence
that carries antibodies that can cure cancer). Tell them why the
world would be a much sadder place without our bouncing little
friend. (In addition to being the only purple toad in the world,
this guy is the only food the frosty wilder beast will eat so
he’s vital to the food chain).

Just like with any other type of copywriting, list the benefits
of the purple spotted toad. Why is he important to nature, how
will the ecology suffer with his demise and what will happen to
the rest of Antarctica if he becomes extinct? All of these are
vital to convincing your audience that they should favor you
with their contributions instead of some other organization.

Everyone In the Search Results

Go to your favorite search engine and type in “copywriting
course” (without the quotes). What do you see? There are a lot
of options listed on the search results page. Are all these
products the same? By all means no!

Some are live workshops, others are e-courses, some focus
strictly on one type of copywriting leaving all others by the
wayside, some are correspondence courses while others are
downloadable. But because they all appear in response to the
query “copywriting course,” they all have the potential to take
sales away. Even if your site falls into the coveted #1
position, the others on the page could potentially grab some of
your sales.

So how do you get surfers to click on your site’s listing? Your
title and description have to be first rate.

If your copywriting course has a specialty (sales letters,
search engines, catalogs, etc.) say so. Choose the most powerful
benefit and a way to set yourself apart (your USP) and use those
in the tags for your search results along with your keyphrases.
Simply having keywords in your title and description might get
you ranked with the engine but it sure won’t entice anybody to
click to your site.

Other Options

There are options and substitutes for practically everything in
the world. If people don’t want to pay for a computer and
Internet access so they can send email, they can write letters
or call their friends and family. If customers decide the cost
of groceries is out of control, they can plant a garden and eat
a vegetarian diet. There are even alternatives to cars: taking a
cab (as most do in New York), bicycling (very popular in London)
or walking (great exercise). All of these alternatives can be
competition for you.

To overcome the pull of other options, when you write copy be
sure emphasize why those other options really aren’t viable. The
sheer act of writing letters takes time in and of itself. Then
you have to mail the letter and wait. If the person wants to
respond, they have to get motivated enough to sit down and write
a reply and mail it. Then you wait again. The phone? Yes, people
could use the phone to talk like they always have, but what
about when you want to show the person you’re talking with
something? A picture of your new grandchild or your new car
can’t be shown over the phone. You get the idea.

Drop the egotistical viewpoint that you have no competition and
take a good, hard look around. Once you’ve realized that there
is always an alternative to buying what you offer, you’ll be in
a better mindset to write copy that outlines why yours is the
only option the prospect should consider.
