Two Horror Game Reviews
Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth
It was natural that an official Lovecraftian survival horror game would eventually be produced. Having inspired so many other horror games, the Cthulhu Mythos was a natural fit for the genre.
Unfortunately, the final product was a critical failure. Unlike many of the games which came before it, the game offered only linear gameplay. While the game was graphically advanced, many of the innovations of the Cthulhu game (like Sanity Points) had already been used in survival horror.
Haunting Ground
The 2005 release, Haunting Ground, was meant to be a continuation of the Clock Tower storyline, and is quite similar to that series. It was designed by Capcom for the Playstation 2 console.
Haunting Ground’s protagonist is Fiona Belli. As the game begins, she finds herself in a cage, wearing nothing but a bedsheet. Fiona has amnesia, which it is later revealed to be part of a car accident. Escaping the cage, Fiona finds she is an a gothic castle, and begins to explore it as a means of escape.
Fiona must evade attackers positioned throughout the castle, all the while learning the insane secrets of the castle’s inhabitants. She is aided in this effort by her canine friend, Hewie.
