Eyes for Life: The Way Forward

For most people considering any kind of reconstructive surgery,
the word plastic surgeon springs to mind. However, when it comes
to the delicate skin area around the eye, you would need to
retain the services of a specialist, an ophthalmic surgeon.
Oculoplastic surgery or ophthalmic plastic surgery is a specific
field involving specialised plastic and reconstructive surgery
of the eyelids, tear duct system and eye socket.

“For anyone considering having surgery to their eyelids,
oculoplastic surgeons offer an additional and welcome insurance
policy,” says Vickie Lee, a consultant ophthalmic and
oculoplastic surgeon. “The areas around the eyes are the first
to show signs of ageing. A properly performed blepharoplasty
should rejuvenate your face and make it look more alert.
However, the eyelids also play an essentially protective role
for the delicate structures of the eye.”

Rachel Deasey has just had an Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty. “I
had my upper eye lids, baggy skin removed. I was nervous, but
looked forward to having it done, as it something that I have
always wanted to do. It has improved my life tremendously. I
feel more confident and I’m making eye contact with people when
I speak to them, instead of looking away because I was so
paranoid about my eyes. I now wear contact lenses where before I
used to hide behind my glasses.”

Oculoplastic surgery embraces a number of procedures to correct
hooded or baggy eyelids and improve the aesthetic appearance of
the eyelids and surrounding area of the face. Blepharoplasty is
the most common procedure. Surgery involves removing and
reconturing excess tissue, skin, muscle and sometimes fat from
the upper and/or lower eyelids. It can be done in conjunction
with other treatments such as a brow lift and Botox. “My
priority is to avoid complications, large or small, which may
affect vision,” says Ms Lee. “I believe oculoplastic surgery
sets the correct balance between a great aesthetic outcome and
ensuring that nothing comes between you and your sight.”

Unlike the traditional cosmetic or aesthetic surgeon, the
ocuplastic surgeon is trained to manage complications, which
involve the eye itself. It’s best to check whether your
consultant has undergone accredited oculoplastic training and
regularly performs a substantial volume of ophthalmic plastic
surgery. For your own peace of mind, check whether they are a
member of the British Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery Society.

An Insight Into Stammering

Stammering is a condition that affects around one in every hundred people in the UK. According to the latest reports on average three quarters of people who have a stammer are male. This article looks into the affects that stammering can have on a persons life and about possible solutions which can help people to achieve fluency.

In truth, I believe it is very hard for a fluent person to fully understand just how difficult life can be for people who stammer. They can of course imagine what it could be like but only a fellow sufferer or former sufferer can really know.

Using the telephone is one of the most difficult of daily tasks facing the stammerer, to such an extent many of them do whatever they can to avoid using it. Tasks which the average fluent person would consider very easy, like ordering a pizza can be very hard for people who stammer. Answering the phone is no easier however the ever rising use of mobile phones has helped as they can now see who is calling them.

Socialising can also be very daunting. Other people constantly asking questions and expecting exciting and interesting conversation puts a huge pressure on people who stammer. Then there is the actual ordering of food and drink. Most people who stammer have certain sounds which they are aware they have most problems with and if for example the drink which they have to ask for begins with this sound, this as you can imagine can fill them with fear.

Gaining employment and progressing up the career ladder is another potential problem for people who stammer. An interview is hard enough for fluent people but is a thousand times harder for people who have a speech impediment. If they stammer they then believe that there is no chance that they will be successful in obtaining the job.

Dating is another area of life which can be a daunting prospect for any person who has a stammer. Even when they meet a woman that they like, there is then the other issues such as meeting her parents and meeting her friends.

As you can see there is a seemingly never ending list of potential hazards for people who stammer and many sufferers can easily become depressed.

Solutions for stammering

There are various different options for people who are looking at overcoming their stammer. These include a private speech course, these can be in a group but there is probably a much higher chance of success by attending a one-to-one course. The duration of the courses can be anywhere between three and five days.

There is also a number of self-help options including dvd’s and stammering ebooks.

It is not easy to eradicate a stammer but if the person who has the stammer has enough determination and is willing to work very hard on practicing whatever techniques they learn, fluency is very much achievable.

A number of famous people have managed to beat their own stammer such as Bruce Willis and these people should be seen as an inspiration to other sufferers.

There is no longer a need to accept second best in life and to have a constant fear of talking.

Tattoos For Women? You Bet!

It’s not really known how long tattooing has been around but
it’s quite possibly as long as 12,000 years and we do know the
ancient Egyptians practiced the art of tattooing.

One may think the art of tattooing has its history mainly with
men. Not so. Women from various cultures tattooed their bodies
for a variety of reasons. Take the women from Borneo. They would
mark themselves to show what they were skilled at, such as
weaving or the gatherer of medicinal herbs. This communicated
their rank as marriage material. In western Asia, girls were
marked in such a way as to show their place in society.

In the last 100 years tattooing was common among criminals,
motorcyclists and gang members but in the last 20 years this has
drastically changed, so much so that approximately 50% of all
tattoos are done on women. And who are these women? These are
the soccer moms, and professional women, the women from ages of
18 to 40.

Tattooing has gone through its ups and downs over the centuries,
and has even been banned many times in different cultures for
periods of time. It appears though that tattooing will never
really go away. During periods of a ban it seems to go
underground until such time it is free to resurface.

Tattooing, (which is a Tahitian word meaning “to be marked”) in
some cultures, has only the women being allowed to do the
markings.

Today’s women are free to make their own choices in regards to
tattooing. It is becoming more and more popular to have artistic
designs placed just about anywhere on the body. You commonly see
tattoos adorning an ankle, or husbands or boyfriends names on a
forearm. Some women like to have a private tattoo for their
spouse only.

Even celebrities are getting them such as Pamela Anderson and
Christina Applegate.

As little as twenty years ago, you did not see tattoos on women
very much. Now you can go to any beach and see a design on the
lower back of many young girls tanning in the sun.

There are many types of tattoos to choose from such as gothic or
Celtic design, Polynesian or Tahitian. Our current day artists
are becoming more creative in their custom patterns.

Taking the time to choose just the right design is of utmost
importance because this is something you will have to live with
for the rest of your life. Tattooing the name Bob just because
he is the most current flame is probably not a wise choice
especially when the real Mr. Right comes along. He may not
appreciate the constant reminder.

Should you choose to get a tattoo, make sure you are dealing
with a reputable shop that is safety conscious.

Women getting tattoos? Absolutely!
